AURORA – For the first time since 1990, an East Aurora High School boys cross country runner will be competing in the state championship meet.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, East Aurora High School junior Felipe Nino will compete in the Illinois High School Association championships at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill.
Nino qualified for the state meet after finishing 16th in the highly competitive Waubonsie Valley sectional meet held on Saturday, Nov. 2. Nino finished the three-mile race in 15 minutes, 52 seconds (about 5:17 per mile).
At the sectional meet, the top five teams qualify for the state meet, as well as the seven individual runners who are not part of a qualifying team. Nino was the seventh individual qualifier, edging out the eighth runner by less than two seconds. Nino was also an individual qualifier out of the regional meet, where he finished 31st and ran 16 minutes, 23 seconds (about 5:28 per mile).
The three-mile state championship race is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9.
In eighth grade, Nino won the City of Lights cross country championship as a Waldo Middle School student. He has been running on East Aurora High School team since he was a freshman. East Aurora varsity cross country coach Shane Gillespie said Nino is a hard worker, both on the cross country course and in the classroom.
“He’s a great kid,” Gillespie said. “He’s the kind of kid you want to make the state meet.”
The last East Aurora High School runner to qualify for the state championships was Derrick Aquino in 1990. Aquino finished 20th place at the state meet.
