Three Things WE KNOW

Battle royale.

East Aurora senior sprinter Desmond Gant edged Tim Roels, Geneva’s defending Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional and Upstate Eight indoor 200-meter champion, twice at the wire last week at the Roger Wilcox Invitational at Oswego. Gant (11.2 seconds) denied Roels, who was making his first multiple-event start of the outdoor season, in the 100 and the 200.

A rare double.

Kevin Grahovec, Marmion’s All-State returnee in the 800, delivered one of the rarest double victories in the track, winning his specialty event and the 400 last week at Sycamore. The 800 relay is the only event between the two disciplines. Grahovec won the 400 in 51.46 after moments earlier running a 1:56.63 at the longer distance.

Put him on the board? Yes. The Class 2A pole vault features five of the top seven returning athletes in the state. Kaneland senior Dylan Kuipers made a case for inclusion in the elite company by soaring 14 feet, 6 inches to win the Crystal Lake Central Invitational last Friday. Gant, Roels, Grahovec and Kuipers all will be in action Friday at the Kane County Invitational at Streamwood.
