East Aurora High School cross country runner represents Tomcats in state meet
AURORA – On Saturday, Felipe Nino became the first East Aurora High School runner to compete in the Illinois High School Association championships in more than two decades.
Nino finished 143rd at the state meet. His time was 15 minutes, 53 seconds (about 5:17 per mile) for the three-mile race at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill.Nino, a junior, will be among the top 70 returning runners at next year’s state meet.
Nino qualified for the state meet after finishing 16th in the highly competitive Waubonsie Valley sectional meet held on Nov. 2. Nino finished the sectional three-mile race in 15:52 (about 5:17 per mile). Nino was also an individual qualifier out of the regional meet, where he finished 31st and ran 16 minutes, 23 seconds (about 5:28 per mile).
In eighth grade, Nino won the City of Lights cross country championship as a Waldo Middle School student. He has been running on East Aurora High School team since he was a freshman. East Aurora varsity cross country coach Shane Gillespie praised Nino’s dedication to school and sports.
“He is a great student athlete who, through his efforts this year, has stepped up as a great leader,” Gillespie said. “He is already looking forward to the prospect of qualifying for the state track meet in the spring.”
The last East Aurora High School runner to qualify for the state cross country championships was in 1990.
