ST. CHARLES -- Waubonsie Valley made a valiant effort to defend its indoor conference title on Thursday at St. Charles East, but fell just a little bit short.

The Warriors won five events to eventual champ St. Charles East's four, and pushed the Saints to the wire in the final race. But the Saints depth was too much.

The Warriors finished second to the Saints (114 points) by scoring 95 points. Neuqua Valley was third with 62 and Bartlett took fourth at 46. East Aurora finished seventh with 31 points.

Winning championships for Waubonsie were Morolake Akinosun in the 55-meter dash (7.22 seconds) and Ayoolowa Adewale in the 55 hurdles (8.95).

The Warriors also had two champs in the field events. Brianna Gatto tied East Aurora's Virginia Handley with a jump of 9-0 in the pole vault, but won based on fewer misses. Dasha Patton finished first in the long jump (17-05.75).

"I did a lot better in the final because I was kind of disappointed that my sister (Moriyke) was disqualified," said Akinosun of the 55 dash. "I was running for me and her."

Waubonsie's other victory came in the 4 x 160 relay with a time of 1:24.51.

Neuqua Valley's only title was in the 4 x 800 meter relay. The Wildcats' time was 10:02.65. Kelly Lonergan was second in the hurdles, and Megan Taylor also grabbed a second in the 1600 for Neuqua.

In addition to Handley, Priscilla Miranda also came close for East's Tomcats with a second place in the 800 meters.

"I'm trying to get back into track shape and all these runners are really good," Miranda said. "I tried to run a smart race. Track shape and basketball shape are way different."

Rachel Rawson (400 meters), Meghan Heuer (800 meters), and Danielle Kuzniewski (200) were St. Charles East's individual champions. The Saints also won the 4 x 400 relay. But their depth led to seven second-place finishes and the conference crown
