Local notes: Aurora University, Waubonsee golfers win titles.

 

Senior David Galvan finished seventh individually last Saturday and helped lead East Aurora's boys cross country team to the Upstate Eight Valley championship.

The Tomcats had a team score of 99, 21 points ahead of runner-up and host Bartlett (120).

Galvan, who finished in 15 minutes, 35 seconds, was followed across the finish line by junior Ricardo Del Toro (12th, 15:49) and senior Jose Alvarado (18th, 15:56). Other runners scoring for East Aurora were sophomore Miguel Gonzalez (26th, 16:06) and senior Ruben Nino (36th, 16:35).

East Aurora's girls finished third, led by senior Jazmine Reyes, finished 22nd in 19:06 at Sunrise Park in Bartlett.

 

The Tomcats boys and girls teams will compete at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Class 3A St. Charles North Regional at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. The 10-team field also includes West Aurora, Marmion, Batavia and Geneva.

Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley, Oswego East and Oswego run Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Class 3A West Chicago Regional.

Both races feed into the 3A West Aurora Sectional that will be run at the Stuart Sports Complex.

Waubonsee golfers win title: Sophomore Matt Yonkovich (Kaneland) finished second individually and helped lead Waubonsee Community College golfers to the Region IV Division II championship last week at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford.

The Chiefs edged Moraine Valley by two strokes in the three-day event and qualified for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, which will be held at the Swan Lake Resort Golf Course in Plymouth, Ind., next May.

Waubonsee shot 304-322-330 for a 54-hole total of 956. Black Hawk took third at 966 and Sauk Valley was fourth in 981.

Yonkovich finished at 15-over-par 231 and trailed medalist Jarred Hippen of Sauk Valley by nine strokes. Three other Chiefs golfers joined Yonkovich in earning All-Region honors: Noah Lindmark, seventh at 238; Jacob Cook (DeKalb), 12th at 243 and Jon Hvasta (Batavia) 13th at 244.

Zack Zamin (Oswego) finished at 273 to close the WCC scoring.

Chiefs head coach Dave Heiss and assistant coach Rodney Davis were named Region IV Division II Co-Coaches of the Year.

Two weeks earlier, WCC edged Moraine Valley on a tiebreaker to win the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title. Yonkovich was the league medalist.

AU women golfers repeat: Aurora University's women's golf team breezed to its second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship, winning by 15 strokes earlier this month at Bristol Oaks Golf Course in Bristol, Wisconsin.

The Spartans had three players earn all-conference honors by finishing in the top eight, individually. Junior Nicole Funk (Oswego East) was fifth with a 54-hole total of 264 after shooting rounds of 87, 96 and 81.

Freshman Lauren Anderson (Batavia) took sixth at 270 (87-97-92) and junior Kara Smith (West Aurora), eighth at 277 (102-89-86). Victoria Phipps (Rosary) was 11th at 285 (99-95-91) and Kayla Bednarski was 19th at 295 (97-96-102) to round out the AU scoring.

Coach Justin Wyeth was named NACC Women's Golf Coach of the Year.

Winning the eight-team meet qualifies the Spartans for the 2015-2016 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships, which will be held May 10-13 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston.
