City champs! Boys cross country wins Aurora City Meet

The varsity boys cross country team won the Aurora City Meet, placing five runners in the top 10. At the meet held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Waubonsie Valley High School, the boys team beat six other high schools from Aurora
The team was led by senior Felipe Nino, who qualified for state in 2013. Nino finished the three-mile race in 16 minutes, 14 seconds, good for fourth place at the meet. Nino improved his time by 21 seconds from the 2013 Aurora City Meet.
Nino had a pack of runners close behind him. Junior David Galvan (16:27) finished sixth, junior Jose Alvarado (16:27) finished seventh, senior Christian Castro (16:39) was ninth and junior Ruben Nino (16:46) came in tenth. The spread from East Aurora’s first to fifth runner was 31 seconds, the smallest margin among any of the teams competing Saturday.
Five runners score points in cross country meets, with the lowest score winning. East Aurora finished with 31 points, easily beating second place Waubonsie Valley which came in second with 55 points.
In the varsity girls race, junior Stephanie Nino led the way with a fourth place finish. She covered the three-mile course in 20:28, a full minute faster than her finish at last year’s Aurora City Meet. Sophomore Arsi Del Real also medaled, finishing 12th at 21:11.
In the frosh-soph boys’ race, East Aurora finished third. Sophomore Ricardo DelToro (fifth) and freshman Edgar Perez (12th) both earned top 25 medals.
